CHICORY FLOWER; BLOOMS FOR JUST A FEW HOURS

1–2 minutes

I found myself suddenly fascinated with learning about Chicory after having drank some in my coffee today, same as I always do.

They’re such an interesting flower, filled with so many uses and surrounded by so many myths. Despite being a weed, they’re not typically considered invasive, mostly because they tend to mind their business as they grow along the roadside.

My favorite part, though, are the flowers of the chicory. They aren’t technically considered flowers; rather, each petal is its own flower, a smaller part of a larger “flower head” called a floret.

For simplicity’s sake, they’re called flowers, and they tend to come up as the sun does, and close sometime early afternoon, after which they will shrivel up and fall off, where it’s then replaced by a new flower in another location the following day. That’s so fascinating, really, a flower that blooms only once for a few hours.
